Homecoming anyone?

Sound's like Jared is getting ready for a homecoming visit to his alma matter. I, on the other hand will not be in attendence, nor do I desire to watch those pesky Pirates get smoked again. Look there goes a Novi runner for a touchdown! I still carry prejudice against those men in tights from my days of getting made fun of for playing soccer. I think today (now about my students) what I thought then, "You guys are dorks."

Commentary

Hey gang. Just a quick note. If you want to read all the comments for a post without going to the ugly 'post your own comment' page, click on the time stamp link under the post. This will bring up a page with the original post and all the comments displayed nicely below. The time stamp is right after where it says: "posted by Hans Blix at _____". FYI. Lahser High School Football ROCKS!

Bandung, Indonesia

So here are a few pictures of our concert in Bandung. It was a multi-denominational prayer/worship conference that Che Ahn spoke at. We led a bit of worship the first night and a whole show the second night. The girl dancing is a gal named Amy, from a neighboring Austin church. The other dancer in green is Alicia Gleason from Vineyard North. Most of you should now the piano player - Sarah Bublitz. Jared, remember when we recruited her for The Well? We had a great time at this concert. It was the best sound system I have ever played through.

Doting daddy

Have I mentioned that I really love my boys? Everyday I am with them, I like them more and more. This is a picture from last Sunday putting Cadence down for a nap. Maybe he just said, in his sweet way, "I love you too, Daddy." I am so scared that I am going to mess them up, especially when I think about my personal problems and insecurities. But I am so happy God gave them to me. I am really starting to look forward to the next one, as well.

My older sister Carrie had her baby. His name is Raymond Harley Shumaker. Another boy. That makes 4 boy cousins in my family so far. Sweet.

Randall's Swim Meet

For those of you not in attendance- this is Randall- taking a break from working on the backstroke during his Special Olympics swimmeet this past winter. Right now, I am on my lunch break from a very long day of "teacher inservice" (read- an entire day of listening to tips like this gem: "Even if you don't have a pet- pretend like you do. It makes you look more human and kids love it when they think their teacher is actually a person".) That was an actual tip given. Well- gotta get back to work... and then feed my dog named "Go Home!"

Keep Austin Weird

Simone and I went to the "Keep Austin Weird" 5k and festival today. We even took the boys. Lets just say I have not been working out much and the temperature was 103 degrees (the heat index was over 110 and the temperature on the asphalt was 130). Seriously, we are not exagerating. I think I almost died, but we both made it. (Simone first, of course). This was not your normal race. We were running with knights in armor, crossdressers, prom queens, hula-skirted frat boys and kids with kilts. Of course there were real runners. The winner came in at like 15:00. Crazy.

We were shocked at how hot we were and how much it sapped our energy. At one point, we thought, "it doesn't seem right that I'm cold right now." That's when we walked for a bit. We came in under 32 minutes - and we were pleased. I mean, it was DAMN hot. Now Simone's talking about doing a half marathon. I'm thinking about it.

Our friend Casey (who is training for a marathon like all our other friends), watched the kids in the festival area. He liked it. Aftewards we met Michael and Sarah to listen to some local bands who were amazing. Ya'll come down and we'll take ya!

I wish they all could be like him...

So here is a good student. His name is Derrick. I wish I had more like him. In fact, really what I wish is that more students were like me. Where are all the students who think they are smarter than the teacher? Where are the ones who will challenge me, look up new words and say weird phrases to me they learned from their cousin in San Antonio?

I wonder what Melissa has to say about this. I bet she shares my desire. Where have all the students gone? Is there not still one in the land? Am I the last of the believers? Surely God has placed a remnant somewhere - perhaps they are all in Bloomfield Hills. Surely there are but a few at Hendrickson High School.

Pep rally today. Everytime I go there I wish it had more pep. The band is good, but the planning is atrocious - and so is the sound system. I have half-offered to set it up for them but then thought better of it. Tonight I will go to the first football game and try to manage Cadence and Eli by myself. Sweet.

School......

I too am sitting at my desk.....except I don't have students yet and I haven't been yelling all day because it is morning. I am looking around my room trying to figure out what I have to do to the physical layout and what needs to be done paperwork-wise. Too bad summer is almost over :( Just for laughs....here is an extreme helmet head picture. Enjoy!

Que bueno!

So I am sitting here at my desk. I have a tie on. My feet hurt from a day of walking and teaching and yelling and making of fool out of myself. I should stay and grade this huge pile of Spanish nonsense my students have written - really its just a hodgepodge of English words with slapped on "O's" and messed up internet translations.

But, I am going to do what I enjoy - go home and see my two wild and crazy boys. Time to wrassle!
I am looking foward to using this medium to allow entrance into my world and have the opportunity to peek in on others. !Aprovechemos!

Welcome to Grandma's House

Hey gang. Welcome to Grandma's House. My theory behind starting this blog would be that it could be a gathering place for our friends from college to keep in touch, share thoughts, photos, etc. Just like we used to always hang out in Phelps 257 way back when. Anyway, this is my first post and I think I'll slap up a picture to go with it. Here is a recent photo from Ben & Simone's trip to Holland. I'm sending many of you emails that will allow you to become a contributer. Just sign up for a free Blogger account and make your first post. I know i'll miss a bunch of people, so send me any emails of friends so I can send them an invite to become a contributer. Email me at jaredh (at) lakeshorevineyard.org. Oh, and you can comment on any post by clicking on the comment links. Please feel free to post pictures, questions, updates on your life, thoughts, jokes, theological problems, sanskrit poems, or anything else that strikes your fancy.

This two shall pass

Had to post this photo because I couldn't resist. Jason has been working hard on his new house, and is all moved in now. I really like what he's done with the bathroom. Nice work Jason. By the way, if you want to download any photos you see here in higher resolution, just click on them and it will take you to a window where you can see and download (by rightclicking) a bigger photo.
